Five of the best 2022 Men's Competition matches

With 2023 fixtures coming soon, we've taken a look back at the five best matches in last year's Men's Competition. Which match are you most looking forward to in 2023?

Oval Invincibles vs London Spirit - 4 August

Spirit win by three runs

The second night of the 2022 Men's Competition could barely have got more dramatic. Spirit posted 171 and were cruising - cruising - to victory. They reduced Invincibles to just 12 runs for four wickets. No chance of a comeback, you'd think.

Wrong. Invincibles' later batters fought back and needed 17 from the final five balls. Bowler Danny Briggs hit a remarkable 29 from 11 balls but it wasn't enough as Jordan Thompson held his nerve.

Manchester Originals vs Trent Rockets - 13 August

Rockets win by eight wickets

When a team records the second-highest total in The Hundred history, most would say they've a fairly strong chance of winning that match. Manchester Originals' 189 against Trent Rockets, led by Phil Salt's 70, was just that.

Except Rockets, the eventual 2022 Men's Competition winners, had other ideas. Dawid Malan struck a stunning 98 not out to sting the Originals, setting up a Rockets victory with six balls remaining.

Welsh Fire vs Birmingham Phoenix - 13 August

Phoenix win by four runs

Kane Richardson was named Match Hero in a narrow Phoenix win, and deservedly so. The visitors to Cardiff had scored just 130 from their 100 balls and looked up against it.

That was never more stark than when Fire needed just 13 runs from ten balls. Enter Richardson to bowl his final set of five balls, conceding just two runs and swinging the match back in Phoenix's favour. Tom Helm saw things out but it was the Australian fast bowler who made the difference.

Northern Superchargers vs Manchester Originals - 21 August

Originals win by 23 runs

The biggest margin of victory of any match on our list, but for good reason. This match was a delight for fans of scoring runs. A year on from conceding 200 against the Superchargers, Manchester Originals got some revenge on their local rivals, piling a record total of 208 runs at Leeds.

Originals struck a mouth-watering 16 sixes in their onslaught - an absolutely thrilling evening's viewing. It looked for a time that Superchargers might chase it down and stun everyone, but it proved too steep a task in the end. Still, 393 runs in a single match was quite the entertainment!

London Spirit vs Birmingham Phoenix - 30 August

Phoenix win by one wicket

Birmingham Phoenix needed to win at Lord's to salvage even a slim hope of qualification. Though they didn't make it to the Eliminator, they did leave London with the victory. It was a near single-handed effort, though.

Chasing a modest target of 140, only Matthew Wade offered big runs. His fabulous 81 got Phoenix close. But it was left to the final batter, Tanveer Sangha, to hit the winning runs - Sangha's 13 not out proving the second-highest score of the innings.
