Oval Invincibles Women's Competition Journey

A look back at how the Oval Invincibles lifted the Hundred trophy at Lord's

5 wicket win vs Manchester Originals

An opening night victory for the eventual champions of the first ever Hundred! They took on Manchester Originals at The Kia Oval and kicked off the competition in style. Bowling first, Tash Farrant showed her talent immediately. She took three wickets, a sign at what would come from the English bowler. The Invincibles were three down within 20 balls and looked to be struggling, but then captain, Dane van Niekerk, came to the crease and changed the match. She scored 50 and won her team the match, picking up the first Cazoo Match Hero along the way.

15 run win vs London Spirit

Batting first against the London rivals, it was a change of attack for the Invincibles. Alice Capsey was at two and hit a special 59 from 40 balls. Van Niekerk added 29 in what was a solid total for her side. It was great bowling again that done it for the Invincibles. Farrant picked up another two and van Niekerk took three. The latter of that pair picked up Heather Knight when she was looking dangerous on 40 - a definite match changing moment.

4 run loss vs Northern Superchargers

The next match saw the Invincibles travel to Headingley to take on the Northern Superchargers. The visitors won the toss and sent their opposition into bat. Alice Davidson-Richards scored 42 as Capsey showcased her bowling ability and picked up 2-9. A total of just 109 looked easy enough to chase for the London side, but a slow innings saw them fall four runs short after using all of their allotted balls.

12 run loss vs Welsh Fire

Bowling first once more, the Invincibles restricted Welsh Fire to 112. Another total that the Oval-based team would have expected to chase based on their early competition form. Grace Gibbs top scored with 21, but the Invincibles lost nine wickets and finished on 100 exactly. A second loss in as many matches.

8 wicket win vs Birmingham Phoenix

Edgbaston was the next destination for the Invincibles, and bowling first, supporters may have been worried based on the previous two results. Birmingham Phoenix finished on 129 with Farrant taking three of the home teams nine wickets. The away side turned their form around however, and a 90 run opening partnership got them off to the perfect start. Georgia Adams added 42 from 30 balls and van Niekerk finished on 67 not out.

8 wicket win vs London Spirit

In their second match against their London rivals, the Invincibles took nine wickets and restricted Spirit to 103 runs. If Tammy Beaumont hadn’t have added her 42, it could have been a much lower total at The Kia Oval. The home team only need 87 balls to reach their target as Adams top scored with 37 not out.

30 run loss vs Southern Brave

In the final group stage match of the competition, Southern Brave batted first at The Ageas Bowl. Sophia Dunkley hit a brilliant 58 not out as only three Brave wickets fell. Heading into bat, Invincibles started well. Marizanne Kapp made 26 and van Niekerk got 31. But an excellent bowling performance form the home side saw Amanda-Jade Wellington take 4-12 and Lauren Bell finish with figures of 3-22. A collapse from the Invincibles that saw them finish 30 runs short.

20 run win vs Birmingham Phoenix

The Eliminator was hosted at The Kia Oval, so handed the Invincibles conditions they were familiar with. Batting first, they scored 114 and knew they needed a solid performance in the field to defend that total. Enter Farrant. The pace bowler got four wickets and gave away just 10 runs. A phenomenal match for her! Kapp also chipped in with 3-21. A final against Southern Brave was set up for the Invincibles.

48 run win vs Southern Brave

A short trip across London and Lord’s was the host for The Hundred final 2021. Invincibles batted first once more, but made a much more impressive score than their previous matchup against Southern Brave. No batter made over 30, but a solid team performance meant they set a total of 121 in their last innings of the year. Brave had also been confident in their top order, but early wickets put the Southampton-based team on 11-5. Stafanie Taylor and Fi Morris provided some resistance, but when Kapp bowled Lauren Bell for the final wicket in the match, Oval Invincibles were crowned champions of the first ever Hundred!
