How the opening fixtures played out in 2021

Southern Brave v Welsh Fire opens the 2022 Men's Competition, and Oval Invincibles v Northern Superchargers in the Women's Competition. But how did the matches pan out last year?

Wednesday 3 August.

Thursday 11 August.

Get those two dates in your diary. The Hundred Men's Competition begins with Southern Brave facing Welsh Fire at The Ageas Bowl on 3 August, while the Women's Competition starts on 11 August as Oval Invincibles take on Northern Superchargers.

But what can we expect from these matches? What happened in them last year? Well, let's take a look!

Southern Brave v Welsh Fire - Men's Competition

This is a rivalry match and so was played twice last year. The first instalment came at Sophia Gardens and Fire dominated. Jonny Bairstow struck a rapid 72 runs while Ben Duckett contributed 53 alongside him. Fire reached 165.

Jimmy Neesham claimed three wickets, conceding just five runs in 15 balls bowled, and Brave could only manage 147.

At The Ageas Bowl, where this year's opening match will take place, Brave came out on top. Once again they scored exactly 147 batting second, but this time it was enough. Quinton de Kock and James Vince both passed 50 as Brave only lost two wickets.

Earlier their bowlers had put the squeeze on Fire, restricting them to only 144. Spinners Danny Briggs and Jake Lintott both picked up two wickets each.

Oval Invincibles v Northern Superchargers - Women's Competition

Last year's encounter took place at Headingley, and it was a low-scoring affair. Alice Davidson-Richards was the major scorer for Superchargers, who batted first, as she hit 42 from 30 balls. Wickets were shared for Invincibles with four bowlers taking two each - Alice Capsey conceded only nine runs, and was the standout.

Invincibles made hard work of the run chase. Superchargers had scored only 109 but they bowled very well to deny Invincibles easy runs. Georgia Adams, Sarah Bryce and Dane van Niekerk all went past 26 but none reached 30. It meant Invincibles made only 105, losing by four runs.
