Two World Cup winners. Aaron Finch and Lauren Winfield. They'll captain the Northern Superchargers.
Announced today. The Northern Superchargers men’s and women’s team captains. They will be led in The Hundred by Aaron Finch and Lauren Winfield.
Finch brings leadership experience as Australia’s white-ball captain. He has played for seven different teams in the Indian Premier League as well as Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League. Stints at Surrey and Yorkshire have provided him experience in the English game too.
Men’s head coach Darren Lehmann selected Finch as a first-round pick in The Hundred Draft. Finch will be in charge of a star-studded lineup which includes fellow countryman Chris Lynn as well as England’s Ben Stokes, Ben Foakes, Adil Rashid and David Willey.
“I’ve spent many years working alongside Darren and I’m really excited to be heading back to Emerald Headingley as captain of the Northern Superchargers. I think we have an excellent side with a good mixture of quality English cricketers and some match-winning overseas stars and I’m very confident of our chances when The Hundred kicks off next summer.”
Lehmann added: “I think we’ve picked a great team and I’m really excited to see what Aaron and I can do with the group. He is a world class cricketer and a superb leader. We want to start The Hundred with a bang and get even more people watching this innovative new short-form of cricket."
World Cup winner Winfield has previously captained Yorkshire Diamonds in the Kia Super League. Her white-ball experience includes time representing Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes and Adelaide Strikers in the Women’s Big Bash League.
Winfield’s teammates so far at the Superchargers are compatriot Linsey Smith and Australian star wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy. Women’s head coach Danielle Hazell has until May 30 to confirm her squad.
“Women’s cricket has been going from strength to strength over the last few years and I’m delighted to be a part of the next chapter as captain of the Northern Superchargers. The Hundred means new teams, new kit, new team-mates. It’s all very exciting for everyone involved and I can’t wait to get out on the field next year and hopefully help lead the team to success.”
Hazell added: “Having spent many years playing with Lauren I know she has what it takes to be a great captain for the Superchargers. She’s played and thrived in some of the highest-profile matches and arenas our sport has to offer which bodes well for the first season of The Hundred and beyond.”
