Birmingham Phoenix players to watch

Who are the match heroes who could play a key role in today’s double-header for the Phoenix?

Birmingham Phoenix and London Spirit kick-off the first ever double-header in The Hundred, with first the Women’s then the Men’s sides facing off. But who are three heroes from the Phoenix who could win them the game?

Amy Jones:

As the Phoenix captain, Jones could make some big calls that will decide the outcome of the tie. England’s international wicketkeeper will play a big role from just behind the stumps but she is just as destructive with the bat, her power hitting could cause any bowler havoc.

Shafali Verma:

An aggressive batter, Verma could cause the Spirit all sorts of problems at the top of the order. At just 17, Verma already has 29 international caps with India. Scoring 81 fours and 30 sixes in T20 internationals, she could get the Phoenix off to a great start.

Issy Wong:

In the bowling department, Wong will make it tough for opposition batters. Her pace bowling has made her one of the form bowlers, taking 3 wickets in the Charlotte Edwards cup for very few runs.

Chris Woakes:

Devastating with the ball and handy with the bat, Woakes will be sure to leave his mark on the match. Taking over 160 wickets for England in shorter format cricket, his experience will be important. Whilst viewed as a bowler first, Woakes’ 1,406 England runs scored are not to be taken lightly

Liam Livingstone:

Winning player of the series in England’s T20 series win over Pakistan, Livingstone brings some form with him to Edgbaston. With a strike rate of 167.47 in T20 internationals, his big hitting could swing the tie in his side’s favour. He is also a bowling option for Phoenix, having both off-spin and leg-spin in his armoury.

Moeen Ali:

An all-rounder, Ali can stamp his authority on both innings. As the Phoenix captain, he may have to make some match deciding choices but with experience captaining England in T20s, he has all the experience to make some big calls. Taking 108 England wickets and scoring over 2,000 runs in the shorter formats, Ali will have a big say on who wins this one.
